The technology behind Tempur-Pedic mattresses has a rich and distinguished background. Born from a marriage of NASA space technology, Scandinavian design, decades of research, and millions of dollars’ worth of funding, Tempur-Pedic mattresses are nothing short of a technological breakthrough.
The NASA Years
Back in the early 1970s, NASA was working on a project to produce a cushioning material that would absorb pressure on astronauts during liftoff. They developed a material that could provide adequate support and distribute weight evenly, in addition to being temperature-sensitive. After using the material exclusively for a period of time, NASA finally released the material to the public in the 1980s.
The Product is Perfected in Scandinavia
The material came to the attention of a group of Scandinavian scientists. The Swedish company Fagerdala and the Danish company Dan-Foam continued to develop the material and soon merged. Ten years later, NASA’s TEMPUR material had been perfected for use as a mattress material.
Temper-Pedic is Born
Bob Trussell from Lexington, Kentucky, visited Dan-Form in Denmark in 1992. Impressed with the TEMPUR material and seeing the opportunity for its use in U.S. mattresses, he formed the Temper-Pedic brand. The first two production centers were in Duffield, Virginia and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Later, Tempur-Pedic merged with Dan-Form, and the company established its global headquarters in Lexington. Tempur-Pedic now produced other products besides just mattresses, including pillows, linens, slippers, and cushions.
