Bunk Beds with Playful Child

The bunk bed is one of the most fun additions to any child’s bedroom. Since they are different from regular beds, though, they have different safety rules. Use these safety tips to enjoy a bunk bed in your home:

  • Use Guardrails

Many bunk beds have the option of lowering either one or both guardrails. You should always keep the guardrails in position, though. Lowering them puts your child at risk for rolling out of the bed during the night. Rolling off of the top bunk can cause serious injuries. Make sure there are no gaps bigger than 3.5 inches between the guardrail and the mattress for the best protection

  • Find a Bed with Mattress Slats

Mattress slats and bunkie boards are designed to keep the mattress from sliding around the bed. It is important for these features to be properly installed. If they are not, the mattress can easily slip out of position. You should also be sure to purchase the correctly sized mattress for your bed.

  • Exercise Caution

One of the best ways to stay safe in a bunk bed is to be careful. Children under six should not be allowed to sleep on the top bunk. No one should ever try to wrestle or play roughly on the top bed. Plugging in a night light will make the ladder safer to climb down when the room is dark. Try to keep the floor around the bed free from anything your child could trip over.
