Wake Up Cooler with Cooling Mattress Toppers

Wake Up Cooler with Cooling Mattress Toppers

You may have a perfectly comfortable mattress, but if you’re too hot when you sleep you might still toss and turn all night. How can you make your bed both cozy and cool? A cooling mattress topper might be the sleep solution of your dreams.

What is a Cooling Mattress Topper?

It’s a thin pad that covers the top surface of the mattress. Sometimes these toppers just rest on top of the mattress, but other toppers have elastic edges like a fitted sheet, which secure them to the mattress. They provide protection for the mattress and additional comfort for the sleeper.

Mattress Toppers Can Be Passive or Active

Passive mattress toppers are made of a material that offers a naturally cooling effect. These include natural latex, feathers, wool, and gel-infused memory foam. Active mattress toppers utilize some sort of cooling system -- either fans or water -- to cool your bed. They’re adjustable, so you can have the temperature that’s right for you.

Factors in Choosing a Mattress Topper

First, consider depth. Mattress toppers typically range from two to eight inches in depth. That’s a pretty broad range, and the topper you choose depends on how dramatically you want to change the way your mattress feels.

Mattress toppers have a variety of firmness levels. If your mattress is a bit too hard, a topper can often be used to soften it. However, a mattress topper is not going to completely change the feel of your mattress.

Memory foam and latex are different. Memory foam is moldable and slowly responds to pressure. If you’re looking for a topper that conforms to your body, go with memory foam. However, if cooler sleep is your aim, make sure you choose one engineered for that purpose. Latex is springier, and doesn’t allow you to sink into it, but it’s more breathable than memory foam.

What cools your topper? Some toppers use an infusion of graphite or copper to dissipate heat, while others are engineered to remain temperature neutral. If you’re a very hot sleeper, you might prefer Phase Change Material (PCM), an icy textile that makes your fabric feel refrigerated.
