When it comes to our mattresses, we’re all a bit
like Goldilocks: We want the one that feels just right. However, the bed
that feels “just right” may actually be contributing to your
back and neck pain in the morning. The right
type of mattress
is ultimately whichever one feels the most comfortable, but there are
some interest facts and figures surrounding the great mattress debate
that might tip the scales in favor of a soft or firm bed.

The Link between Your Mattress and Back Pain

Just a mattress, huh? Tell that to orthopedic surgeons. In a recent survey,
95 percent of orthopedic surgeons polled said they believe a mattress
plays a significant role in lower back pain management. Although the age
and quality of the mattress has a major effect, some experts believe (though
can’t prove) that back pain is more prominent among
firm mattress sleepers.

Improvement in Pain and Sleep Quality

And those experts wouldn’t be wrong. In a study published in
The Lancet, a British medical journal, researchers found that patients suffering
from back pain were twice as likely to experience improvement when sleeping
on a medium-firm mattress compared to patients who slept on a firm or
extra-firm mattress. This study suggest that a medium-firm mattress provides
a better balance between back support and comfort for lower back pain,
though other factors such as your height and weight also play a factor.
