Mattress technology is constantly evolving, giving the consumer a wide range of choices when it comes to a new bed. Finding the right mattress size is the key to buying a mattress that will suit your every need.

Twins

A regular twin mattress measures 38'' x 74.5''. Basic mattress guidelines suggest that a mattress should be at least 6 inches longer than the tallest person who will be using the bed. Twin-sized mattresses are generally the best for a child’s bedroom. Twin XL mattresses, which are still 38'' wide, but stretch out to a length of 79.5'' might be better for a dorm room or a small apartment where space is an issue.

Fulls

Standard full-sized mattresses are 53'' x 74.5'', and are usually recommended for single sleepers who are shorter than 5'5''. Full mattresses work well for young children and teenagers. You should try to keep at least 22'' of available space around your bed so you don’t bump into other furniture, so a full XL mattress, which is still 53'' wide, but which adds 5'' to the length, might work well if you live in a small house.

Queen

A queen mattress is 60'' x 79.5''. They are significantly larger than twin and full mattresses, but they do not provide a lot of extra space for two people. If you and your significant other like to sleep close together every night, then a queen will be ideal for you.

Kings

Couples usually love king-sized beds because they are 76'' x 79.5'', which gives each person the space to spread out while sleeping. A California King measures 72'' x 83.5'', and works well for people who are taller than average. Since king mattresses are so wide and so long, it is a good idea to measure the bedroom, hallways, and doorways to make sure you have enough room for one.
