Whether you’re furnishing a new home or simply upgrading your kids’ rooms, there are a few important steps to take that will help the process of selecting and buying go more smoothly. Bunk beds can be a great option for kids. They’re good for economy of space, but they’re great in larger rooms as well.

 1.      Decide on the amount of vertical space you have available.

Before you go to buy your bunk beds or any type of bed or mattress, the first thing to do is to measure the space you have to work with. You should confirm that there will be at least two feet from the top of the bunk bed to the ceiling, so your child doesn’t bump his or her head. Most bunk beds are between 5 ½ to 6 feet tall, so if your ceiling is lower than 8 feet, you may need to look around for a shorter bunk bed.

 2.      Measure the amount of available floor space.

How much floor space you’ll need depends on the type of bunk bed. Although the width is generally the same as a twin-sized mattress, if there are drawers that slide out or other moving parts, you’ll need to factor in a few more feet.

 3.      Decide on a style: basic or lofted?

There are many different types of bunk beds on the market offering a range of styles and options. The traditional twin-over-twin style is common, but twin-over-full is also a popular style. These are “basic” bunk beds. The other broad category of bunk beds is the lofted style, which could have a futon below it, or a desk. Some bunk beds have a third trundle bed that slides out.

Consider how much storage space you need. Lofted bunk beds may be a good option as things can be kept under them, or you can choose a bunk bed that has sliding drawers. If your child likes to have friends over for sleepovers, you may want to forgo the storage space in favor of a futon or a pull-out trundle bed. In a small room with limited space, you may want to put a study area under a lofted bed. If your child is young, make sure that the bed has sturdy guardrails.
